Anorexia Nervosa: Definition, Those Affected, Symptoms, Physical and Psychological Effects, and Treatments

This is a 10 page paper discussing all the aspects of anorexia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is a eating disorder which is a considered the refusal by an individual to maintain normal body weight but instead loses weight either by diet, exercise or purging with an attempt to obtain an ideal body weight; however, the individual never has the perception of reaching that ideal weight. Anorexia causes severe physical damage and in many cases may result in death. The largest portion of the population affected by anorexia is teenage girls and if untreated can lead to a 20% morality rate. Treatment of the disease decreases the mortality rate to 1 to 2% but treatment is a difficult and long process. While 60% of those treated enjoy a full recovery, 20% continue with the disease and the other 20% relapse back into the disease. Treatments proven to be the most successful are those which combine elements of hospitalization, psychological counseling on individual, group, family and support levels and some pharmacological treatments to decrease depression. Antidepressants: Prescription Rates and Side Effects

Side effects associated with antidepressants are also discussed such as nausea, anxiety, violence in children, sexual dysfunction and birth defects. The increase in prescriptions are a result of physicians who are not trained in depression treatment prescribing antidepressants to their patients as a first treatment for depression rather than therapy which is considered more costly and time consuming.
